Lieutenant Robert 'Rex' King-Clark (1913-2007) dressed for 'a night on the frontier' between Palestine and either Lebanon or Syria. The operation was aimed at preventing Arab fighters from infiltrating into Palestine to take part in the rebellion against British rule.
This photograph was taken on the roof of the Canaan Hotel overlooking the town of Safad (now Safed). The hotel was home for Rex and a detachment of the 1st Battalion during this portion of their time in Palestine.
Rex spent the Second World War with the 2nd Battalion, being evacuated from Dunkirk and eventually commanding them during the fighting in Burma.
After the war Rex served with the Glider Pilot Regiment and as a Staff Officer in the UK and during the Korean War. He was Second in Command of the 1st Battalion during 1954 and 1955 and retired from the Army in September 1958.
Rex spent his retirement living in Shandon on the coast of the Gare Loch in Scotland. He wrote a number of books about Manchester Regiment personalities and his wartime experiences.
